Thanks for that recommendation, that is a very tempting camera, but I wish it had a flash.

Slogging about the ‘net for a game-free kids camera I am realizing that in addition to game-free cameras not being obviously marketed as such, it appears that some great game-free models can be found in the waterproof kid’s cameras category, many with a flash (which my kid loves).

Might I suggest you do a page dedicated to game-free cameras?

:)

The Kidamento that we recommend here doesn’t have games, John – how about that one?

I feel the inclusion of games on a kid’s camera is a terrible idea, as it quickly leads to a video game obsession, not an exploration in photography.

I gave my kid my beat-up old Canon G11 camera, which is an advanced camera not for kids. Even at age 5 he was fascinated by all the controls, and spent hours playing with it — until he dropped the fragile camera and broke it.

I’m having a very tough time finding shock-resistant, game-free kid’s cameras. I’m half tempted to buy a used G11 (pretty much the same price as a new kid’s camera) and let him have at it again. At least he won’t be playing games in a corner.

What’s the point of your flex, Bradley? Parents came here to look at reviews for kid cameras in the $30-$60 range and you’re gonna brag how you bought your daughter a $450 camera?

It’s great when a kid can use an ‘adult’ camera, Bradley, so well done encouraging that one. The Olympus Tough series started out as average cameras, but have steadily got better release after release. For a child though, any of them is more than adequate! I wish you and your daughter all the best with your photography :-)

So we got her a used Olympus Stylus Tough. It is drop resistant and waterproof to a certain point. Added a floating wrist strap.

We have taken it to the lake, the beach, and it has been dropped and dragged all over the place. Still working like a charm.

She is only three but is savvy enough to take pictures and turn it off and on without help. She loves looking at pictures. So the next step is to put together a little picture book of her images.

Then recently gave her my old Canon 20D DSLR with a Canon 50mm f1.8 lens. She’s shooting stop animation with her American Girl dolls. So for her birthday we bought her own tripod so she wouldn’t have to keep borrowing mine.
