Nancy Flammea

Hi everyone, my name is Nancy and I’m a portrait photographer living in Melbourne Australia. From an early age, my world has been involved in the Arts one way or another.

Cutting my teeth on stage in vaudeville fashion at the age of three and spoon fed the glamour of old black & white movies, my passions were cemented in the world of Art and Culture.

As a teenager during the 1970’s I studied Classical Ballet at The Victorian College of the Arts and it was at this unique school where I was first introduced to photography and the darkroom process. I developed a passion for photography from then on but was unable to buy myself a decent camera until much later in life.

It wasn’t until five years ago at the age of 50 that I renewed my love for photography. Drawing on a lifetime of artistic mediums greatly influences the images I create, and the use of props and costumes plays a huge part in developing a theatrical look to my images.

I am obsessed with the concept of past lives and who we might have been in a previous life, so my images for me are like little snippets of time past.

My kit is simple, I use a Canon EOS 5D Mark III which is the first camera I bought five years ago. I find Canon easy to use and it’s what I feel comfortable with, along with my trusty Canon zoom lens Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM. I find this lens really versatile and it suits the small space that I work in.

I’m building up to other purchases and hope to buy the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM very soon.

While I’m shooting I use my SpiderPro Single Camera System V2.

I have a small studio where I mainly use one Studio flash light Visico VC 500HH plus, with a 140cm Octagonal Softbox together with my Yongnuo RF-603-II C3. I have a three-tiered backdrop system and a portable backdrop stand (see here) for my ever-growing collection of backdrops (guide) and a Godox 150cm Collapsible 7-in-1 Reflector.

I mainly shoot in my studio but if I do go on location, I pack everything I need into my Lowpro Flipside 400AW II backpack which is especially great for overseas travel.

Occasionally when travelling I will shoot landscapes and street photography, for that, I sometimes use my ultra wide-angle Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 II DG HSM lens and I pack my ProMaster XC-M 525CK tripod for any night or low light scenes.

Of course, my creations would not come to life without my Apple iMac 27” computer, together with Adobe Lightroom CC and Adobe Photoshop CC to complete the overall feel and mood of the image.

There is always something new to learn and goals to aim for in photography, enjoy the journey.
