This New Tamron Firmware Update for Select Zoom Lenses Is Important

Owners of one of Tamron’s 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD or 35-150mm f/2-2.8 Di III VXD full-frame lenses for Sony E cameras can enjoy a useful new firmware.

Tamron has released the new update for the sake of giving the above lenses “significantly improved” AF functionality.

The update refines accuracy for moving subject tracking and the two zoom lenses covered by this update now also sport AF assist for video recording with Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras.

The Tamron update advances the 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD to version 4 and the 35-150mm f/2-2.8 Di III VXD to version 3.

In the case of the 28-200 lens, you can obtain its firmware from the Tamron support website, here. For the 35-150mm, you can download the update through Tamron’s Lens Utility.

Obviously, this firmware update is free for these lenses.

Tamron’s 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD lens is an all-in-one-zoom from 2020 that despite is age remains the only full-frame all-in-one-zoom out there with a wide-end f/2.8 aperture

Tamron and authorized retailers sell this particular lens for roughly $800 and as Tamron originally explained about it following its 2020 release, “The new 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 is a distillation of all Tamron’s accumulated all-in-one zoom expertise and has been specifically developed as an all-in-one zoom for daily use on a full-frame mirrorless camera,”

As for Tamron’s 35-150mm f/2-2.8 lens, it’s a bit newer, being from 2021, and is also available for Nikon Z cameras in addition to its Sony E mount variant.

The 35-100mm is more of a travel, street and portrait lens that uses the most common focal lengths for a range of shooting types including wide-angle, telephoto and standard.

This particular lens uses Tamron’s VXD linear motor focusing system for better speed and precision in its AF. The new firmware is designed to refine this even further.

This much pricier but versatile lens retails for $1,900 in its Sony version and $2000 in its Nikon Z edition.
