I loved your article, Greg. I was inspired to create a chart summarizing the many categories of photography because some of the the stock sites I upload to ask for the genre of each photo submitted. Your article will help me to provide the most precise name; it might also inspire me to try out a few of the ones here that are new to me. I also like that you clarified how some of the categories you covered are off-shoots of others–for instance, Star Trail and Milky Way photography are sub-genres of Astrophotography. One sub-category of Still Life not covered here is the very specialized, and rather obscure, genre of what I call “vanitas photography,” inspired by the productions in particular of the Golden Age of Dutch Painters. Contemporary photographers have produced some stunning versions of this very symbolic and moralistic type of Renaissance art, and their photos are easily Googled. I have several instances on my Flickr website. As you’ve inspired me, perhaps I can inspire you to take a look. Oh, another genre is ultraviolet photography (UV). Don Komarechka has a superb book covering macro and UV photography called Macro Photography: The Universe at Our Feet. Cheers!
